Keeping children entertained can be a challenge, especially during the school holidays. To make things easier, we’ve put together five fantastic places to visit with kids, ensuring fun-filled days out for the whole family.
1. Foxton Locks

If you’re looking for a scenic and educational day out, Foxton Locks is a great choice. As the largest flight of locks in the country, it’s fascinating to watch the canal boats navigate through while learning about the clever engineering that controls the water flow. The towpath walk is lovely, with statues of real people and animals from the lock’s history, each with a plaque sharing their stories. There’s also a small museum that offers a deeper look into the lock’s past. Our family’s favourite part? Enjoying what we believe is the best ice cream ever while watching the boats go by!
2. Castle Howard
Located on the outskirts of York, Castle Howard is a breathtaking stately home with something for everyone. Visitors can explore the grand interiors of the house, while the beautifully landscaped gardens offer plenty of space for hide-and-seek or leisurely walks through open woodlands. Throughout the year, Castle Howard hosts a variety of events, including its stunning Christmas markets, where you can find unique decorations. For younger visitors, there’s an incredible children’s play area with zones designed for different age groups.

3. Birmingham Sea Life Centre
Perfect for a rainy day, the Birmingham Sea Life Centre is one of our favourite family destinations. Arriving early means you’ll get the best views of the sea creatures. The centre is packed with interactive experiences, including opportunities to touch some marine animals. One of the highlights is the penguin enclosure, where you can see them both above and below the water. If you check the timetable, you can also catch feeding sessions and educational talks throughout the day. Another must-see? The playful giant otters!

4. Twycross Zoo

Twycross Zoo offers a fantastic day out with plenty to see and do. Alongside the incredible variety of animals, there are feeding times and informative talks to enhance your visit. One of the standout attractions is the sensory Gruffalo Walk, which brings the beloved Julia Donaldson story to life with sounds, smells, and interactive features. The zoo also has several play areas and cafes scattered throughout. If your little ones love water play, don’t forget a change of clothes for the splash pad zone! Prefer to bring your own food? There are plenty of picnic benches available.
5. Royal & Derngate Theatre
For families who love live entertainment, the Royal & Derngate Theatre is a brilliant place to visit. They host a fantastic variety of shows throughout the year, including beloved children’s stories brought to life on stage. Whether it’s Tom Fletcher’s There’s a Monster in Your Show or Julia Donaldson’s The Smartest Giant in Town, there’s something for all ages. The Christmas productions are always a highlight—2024 featured The Jolly Christmas Postman, and 2025 will bring Mog’s Christmas to the stage. Their vouchers also made great presents!

Our Final Thoughts
Planning a day out with kids can feel overwhelming, but finding family-friendly venues makes all the difference. Whether you’re looking for an indoor adventure or an open space for little ones to burn off energy, these five places offer something for everyone. Happy exploring!
