Sitting down and watching TV has always been my happy place. Back in the early days with my first child, it was something my wife, daughter, and I could enjoy together—no interruptions, just good times.
But, oh, how things change! Once my oldest decided she had her shows to watch, those peaceful TV moments got a little… scarce. And now, with two daughters in the mix and a three year age difference, the idea of watching TV without interruptions feels like a distant dream.
So, when I do get the chance to sit down and binge, I’m not willing to waste it. Nope. I want comedy shows that are short, easy to watch, and don’t need a ton of brainpower. Because let’s face it—parenting takes enough of that already!
1. My Top Pick: Ghosts UK

Let’s kick things off with my absolute favorite: the UK version of Ghosts. This BBC comedy is pure genius. It’ll have you laughing, crying, and even questioning life—all in the best way possible.
Fair warning: once you start watching, it’s nearly impossible to stop. Trust me, I’ve had more than a few late nights because of this show, which makes those 5 a.m. wake-up calls (courtesy of my two daughters jumping on me) very interesting. You’d think I’d learn my lesson by now, but nope—totally worth it every time!
Now, there is a US version of Ghosts, but I just couldn’t get into it. For me, it lacked the charm and top-tier acting of the UK original. That said, I know plenty of people who love the US version just as much, if not more.
So, what’s your take? Are you team UK Ghosts, or does the US version do it for you? Let me know—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
2. In the Number 2 Spot: Motherland

Coming in at number two is Motherland. This British comedy is another gem, offering a hilarious and relatable look at parenting from the perspectives of two very different mothers and a father. Of course, there’s also a cast of quirky side characters who bring their own chaos and charm to the mix.
The show centers on an unlikely friendship group that’s equal parts laughter, stress, and, yes, even a little resentment. Honestly, it’s comedy gold. The cast is phenomenal, and I couldn’t help but feel a bit gutted when I realised there are only three seasons.
What I love most about Motherland is how relatable it is. There were so many moments when I thought, Yep, this is my life now. It’s oddly comforting to know that the madness of parenting is a universal experience.
3. My Guilty Pleasure: The American Office

Let’s head across the pond for my ultimate TV guilty pleasure: The American Office. Based on the UK version created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (who also served as executive producers on this spin-off), this show has become my go-to for background noise or a quick laugh. Honestly, I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve rewatched it!
The first seven seasons? Absolutely brilliant. Steve Carell as Michael Scott is comedy perfection. The last two seasons? Well… they have their moments, but let’s be real—losing Carell changed the vibe. It’s like they kept going just to squeeze out a bit more cash, even though it impacted the overall quality.
That said, I still adore the show. With episodes running just over 20 minutes, it fits perfectly into my busy lifestyle. Whether I have time for a full binge session or just need something quick to watch, The American Office never fails to deliver.
4. Back to the UK: Gavin & Stacey Takes My Number 4 Spot

Now we’re back in the UK for yet another fantastic British comedy on the BBC. Coming in at number four is Gavin & Stacey. Of course, we just had the final-ever episode air on Christmas Day 2024—a perfect send-off for this brilliantly written and produced series.
I’ve been a fan of Gavin & Stacey from the very beginning, way back when it first aired 17 years ago. That was long before kids came along, and I still looked (and felt!) a bit more youthful. This feel-good comedy is another shining example of the incredible writing talent of James Corden and Ruth Jones.
If you haven’t watched it yet, I’d suggest you get the kids to bed early, grab some snacks, and dive in. With only three seasons and a handful of Christmas specials, it’s a quick binge that’s absolutely worth it.
The exciting news? James and Ruth have mentioned they’re starting to brainstorm a new project together once they’ve finalised an idea. No pressure or anything, but we’re all hoping they can capture lightning in a bottle again like they did with Gavin & Stacey. Fingers crossed!
5. A Curveball at Number 5: Santa Clarita Diet

Taking my final spot is Santa Clarita Diet. This one’s a bit of a curveball, but hear me out—it’s worth it! The comedy follows a seemingly ordinary family whose life gets turned upside down when the mum becomes a zombie. Yeah, I know it sounds a bit out there, but trust me, once you’ve watched a few episodes, you won’t want to stop.
I originally watched this gem on Netflix, and it’s such a shame they decided to cancel it after just three seasons. Apparently, the production costs were too high for a fourth season. Honestly, that’s my one gripe with it—just as you get fully invested, it ends.
That said, the three seasons we do get are brilliant. It’s quirky, funny, and totally unique. If you’re in the mood for something different, I’d highly recommend giving it a go!
My Final Thoughts: A Perfect Blend of British and American Comedy
When it comes to TV shows, there’s something truly special about British comedies. The sharp wit, relatable characters, and effortless humor make them a joy to watch. Whether it’s the heartwarming chaos of Gavin & Stacey, the brutally honest parenting humor in Motherland, or the ghostly hilarity of Ghosts, British TV knows how to hit all the right notes.
That said, a couple of American gems have also made their mark. The American Office brings its own brand of awkward, laugh-out-loud moments, while Santa Clarita Diet takes a quirky, zombie-filled spin on the family sitcom formula. Both offer something unique, proving that great comedy knows no borders.
As parents, life is often a whirlwind of activity, responsibilities, and chaos. That’s why it’s so important to carve out a little time for yourself. These shows are perfect for winding down after a long day of parenting—whether you’re sneaking in a single episode during nap time or indulging in a late-night binge (just don’t blame me for the morning struggle!).
