5 Reasons Why Breastfeeding Worked for Me

Becoming a mum brought many decisions, and choosing to breastfeed was one of the most significant. While I initially wondered if it would fit into my life, breastfeeding became an incredibly fulfilling experience. Looking back, I can confidently say it worked for me, and here’s why:

1. The Bonding Experience

Breastfeeding allowed me to form a unique bond with my baby. Holding my little one close, feeding, and comforting them created a connection that felt incredibly special. Those quiet moments, especially during late-night feeds, brought us closer, strengthening our relationship. The skin-to-skin contact also triggered the release of oxytocin, making those bonding moments even more powerful.

2. The Best Nutrition for My Baby

Breastfeeding provided my baby with optimal nutrition. “Liquid gold” is a fitting description for breast milk—it adapts to their changing needs and offers vital antibodies for protection. I was reassured knowing that, especially during sickness, my body produced the necessary nutrients and antibodies to support my baby’s health.

3. Convenience and Simplicity

The convenience of breastfeeding can’t be overstated. I didn’t have to worry about sterilising bottles or preparing formula. Wherever we were, I always had the perfect meal ready for my baby, at the right temperature. It also made late-night feeds more manageable as I could feed my baby without having to leave bed. This freedom and simplicity made life as a new mum much easier.

4. The Challenges of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding isn’t without its challenges. Sometimes, it felt isolating—especially during the nighttime feeds. I sometimes wished others could share the responsibility. It also made leaving the house harder, as I had to plan around my baby’s feeding schedule or express milk in advance. And physically, I faced issues like blocked ducts. While these were tough, I worked through them with support from my partner.

5. Support and Self-Care

Having a supportive partner and focusing on self-care was essential. As the sole feeder, I learned the importance of taking care of myself—eating well, drinking enough, and staying hydrated. The physical and emotional toll of breastfeeding was much easier to handle with a supportive partner, and managing the challenges together made it more rewarding.

Our Final Thoughts

Breastfeeding brought many challenges, but it worked for me because of the benefits it offered—bonding, optimal nutrition for my baby, and convenience. The experience wasn’t without its struggles, but it was a deeply rewarding journey. Every mum’s breastfeeding journey is different, and no one way is right. For me, breastfeeding was the best choice, and I’m thankful for the connection it created with my baby.
